Perfect riding temp — not too hot
Long golden days on the trail
Virtually zero rain all month
Dry air, dust trails, clear skies
Late September is the perfect weather window for southern Portugal — the summer heat has broken, trails are bone dry, and you get 9+ hours of golden sunshine. This is peak season for adventure touring, and Wilderness Collective's Portugal dates fill up fast. We locked in September 24–30 to guarantee the best conditions: warm days (80°F), cool nights, virtually no rain, and the Algarve coast at its most dramatic. October starts getting wetter — by November, rainfall triples. This is the window.
A motorcycle endorsement is required for this trip. It's easier than you think — most riders get it done in a single weekend.
Weekend course. Bikes provided. No experience needed.
Bring your completion card. May need to pass written test.
Walk out with a motorcycle endorsement on your license.
We're confirming with Wilderness Collective whether a motorcycle permit (written test only, no riding test) is sufficient for this trip, or if a full Class M endorsement is required. We recommend getting the full endorsement to be safe — it only takes one extra weekend.

1 weekend + 1 DDS visit
Complete the Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program (GMSP) Basic Rider Course (2–3 days, bikes provided)
Visit a DDS Customer Service Center with your course completion certificate
Pass a vision test — the GMSP certificate waives BOTH the written and riding skills tests
Pay the license fee and receive your Class M endorsement
Georgia is the easiest — MSF course waives ALL tests. You have 90 days from course completion to visit the DDS.
No problem. The MSF Basic Rider Course provides motorcycles for the course — you don't need to bring your own. The course is designed for complete beginners. They teach you everything from scratch on their bikes.
Find a course near you at MSF-USA.org
You'll also need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to ride in Portugal. Get one from AAA for $20 — just bring your license, two passport photos, and fill out the application. Make sure to check the "motorcycle" box.
